Hi! My name is Sarah Rome. I’m an American-Canadian editor, videographer, and director based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
My biggest personal interests lie in culture, travel, science fiction (Star Trek!), Japanese culture, languages, cats, gender politics, and of course film.
My favourite directors include Stanley Kubrick and Hayao Miyazaki and the films I admire most include ‘Life is Beautiful’, ‘Mr. Nobody’, and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ (‘The Return of the King’, if I must choose).
Why film? Why, because film is able to beautifully combine visuals, dialogue, music, sound effects, movement, colour, and more to tell a story or send a message to its audience. It opens a new world that has the power to stir one’s emotions to the point that it can change how someone thinks or feels about a topic. It’s more than just entertainment – it’s a way of communicating and sharing ideas globally. This is what makes film fantastic and why I want to be a part of it.
Currently, I enjoy exploring the world of Dutch filmmaking as I have the opportunity to meet many Dutch filmmakers and talent (both emerging and well-established) as part of the Shortcutz Amsterdam team. We’re in the process of making and editing interviews with all the special guests and competitors, which will be available online soon.
As a side project, I’ve also recently started a personal vlog called Forever Foreign to explore different cultures and topics I care about. More videos are already underway!
